One of my biggest passions in life is Dungeons & Dragons. Even though I’ve only played in one full campaign so far (and I’m preparing to try my hand at becoming a Dungeon Master), I’ve fallen in love with everything about it—its creativity, its collaborative storytelling, its lore, the character dynamics, and the way a world can spring to life in the mind’s eye using nothing more than a sheet of paper, a handful of dice, and a vivid imagination.
A Legacy of Storytelling
My fascination with creativity—and with people who are naturally creative—comes from my grandmother. She believed that the ability to breathe life into the written word was an art form worth preserving and nurturing. She treasured storytellers like C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, David Eddings, and J.K. Rowling long before she passed in the early 2000s. I’m fairly certain she valued creativity even more highly than raw intelligence, and that belief has stayed with me throughout my life.
Discovering Dungeons & Dragons Through Critical Role
My first real introduction to Dungeons & Dragons was through Critical Role. I was instantly hooked by the balance of simplicity and intricacy in the game. Even though I’d heard of D&D for years, I had never seen a campaign unfold—or been invited to participate in one—until then. Watching Matthew Mercer build a living, breathing world while his players threw themselves into the story was an absolute joy and an inspiration.
Joining My First Campaign
A few years later, I finally had the chance to play in a campaign myself—and I jumped at it. I’ll admit that the role-playing aspect still challenges me (I am not a natural actor!), but the limitless creativity, strategy, and problem-solving options quickly won me over.
From the moment our campaign began, a new world of crafting possibilities opened up for me. I started a D&D campaign journal where I documented our adventures, tracked my character’s growth, organized our inventory, and even kept notes on our financial ups and downs.
Stepping Into the Role of Dungeon Master
Now I’m beginning a new chapter—becoming a Dungeon Master and hosting a home campaign. I’ll be working from a mix of a pre-written campaign book and a collection of standalone dungeons. And because I love the visual side of combat and strategy planning, I’m already preparing to build an ever-expanding collection of miniatures, terrain, and other tabletop accessories.
I’m also planning to develop a complete set of inventory cards for my players: items, spells, abilities, trinkets—you name it. Organization is my happy place, and D&D gives me a thousand ways to channel that energy.
Follow Along on My D&D Creative Journey
I hope you’ll join me as I share pages from my D&D journal, my experiences as both a player and a DM, and the creative projects I build along the way.
Be sure to follow me on Instagram for behind-the-scenes photos, crafting progress, miniatures, terrain builds, and more—and please share your own D&D creations with me. I love seeing every facet of this hobby’s creativity and originality!
