Discovering the Magic of Carvable Pumpkins
A few weeks ago, I was browsing my local craft store for Halloween decorations when I stumbled across something I’d never seen before—carvable pumpkins!
Now, these aren’t the typical real pumpkins you have to scoop the slimy guts out of (Eww!) before carving a face that starts to wilt on the porch before Halloween even arrives. These are foam or craft pumpkins made for decorating—and the creative possibilities blew me away!
Naturally, my curiosity took over. How do you carve these? What do they look like inside? Can you paint them? How long do they last? After a quick search on Google, I found so much inspiration that I knew I had to try this myself. Let’s just say—I’m hooked!
My First Carvable Pumpkin Project: A Mini Graveyard Diorama
While there are plenty of ways to decorate carvable pumpkins—from classic jack-o-lantern faces to painted designs—one idea stood out to me: diorama pumpkins.

The moment I saw them, I knew that was the direction for my Halloween craft this year. For my first try, I decided on a simple graveyard theme.
I 3D printed some tiny gravestones I found on MakerWorld and ordered some faux grass for the pumpkin’s base. Then, I gathered my supplies, headed to my craft room, and even shared the whole process live on Twitch (come hang out with me there sometime!).

Painting and Detailing the Mini Graveyard
I started by painting the gravestones gray and adding a black wash to bring out the details. To make them look even more realistic, I plan to dry brush a bit of white around the edges and dab on some green for a mossy effect.
Then came the nerve-wracking part—cutting into the pumpkin itself! My perfectionist brain was screaming that I’d ruin it (any other crafters feel this too?), but I pushed past that fear and went for it.
And I’m so glad I did. 🎃
Using a regular kitchen knife, I cut a rough oval opening. There was one little rough spot at the bottom, but that’s easy to hide with some moss—or maybe even a tiny skeleton escaping from the graveyard!

Painting the Inside for a Nighttime Effect
The next big decision was whether to paint the inside. I wanted it to look like nighttime in my miniature graveyard, which meant a dark interior. I was nervous, but after testing a small patch with black paint, I loved it.
So, I went all in—and it turned out amazing. The inside of this pumpkin is now blacker than the heart of a pirate! 🏴☠️

Next, I’m planning to add glow-in-the-dark paint to create tiny stars and maybe 3D print a little tree or skeleton figure for the scene. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!
Follow the Final Reveal!
I’ll be sharing photos of my process and the final diorama pumpkin on my Instagram—be sure to follow me there so you don’t miss the big reveal!
And if you’ve created your own carvable pumpkin masterpiece, I’d love to see it. Tag me or send me a photo—I’m always inspired by fellow makers!
